All Purpose Disinfectants and Cleaners

All Purpose Disinfectants and Cleaners

Disinfectants are substances which are capable of killing microorganisms. These substances are used to clean hospitals, clinics, and other medical facilities, along with bathrooms and kitchens. The goal behind the use of disinfectant is to reduce the number of microorganisms present on a surface like a counter or a floor, thereby decreasing the risk of contracting an infection. Many stores which stock housekeeping supplies carry household disinfectants, and medical suppliers carry stronger versions for use in medical facilities.

In most cases, a disinfectant cannot completely sterilize a surface, although it can eliminate a large number of microorganisms. Products which can sterilize must be used exactly as directed, and in a very controlled environment. Sanitizers, a closely related family of products, kill less microorganisms than disinfectants, but they are still more effective than simple soap and water. Antiseptics are products which are designed to be used on the skin, as for example in surgical preparation, while antibiotics are formulated for ingestion.

A variety of surfaces can be treated with disinfectants, including textiles, which can be washed in disinfectant solutions, along with floors, counters, and walls made from materials like wood, tile, glass, concrete, and so forth. The strength of a given disinfectant can be increased or decreased with the use of a diluting agent such as water; some disinfectants are designed to be diluted before use.

A wide variety of compounds can be used as disinfecting agents. Alcohols are quite common, as are oxidating agents like hydrogen peroxide, iodine, and bleach, along with phenolics. Many disinfectants are toxic to humans and pets, so they must be used carefully in order to avoid making someone sick, and disinfectants must also be used consistently and properly in order to be effective. Failure to follow protocol can result in leaving microorganisms behind in a clean environment which they can rapidly colonize.

In the home, using disinfectants can prevent the spread of disease between family members, and it can also reduce the risk of food borne illness in the kitchen. Because the pool of available microorganisms is relatively small, high-grade disinfectants are usually not necessary. At medical facilities, where large numbers of patients pass through with an assortment of infections, more serious disinfectants may be needed, especially since some visitors may have immune vulnerabilities.

Around the house, bleach is one of the best disinfectants available. It is highly effective, relatively easy to use, and safe when it is handled properly. It can be used to clean contaminated textiles as well as floors, sinks, and counters. It is also possible to purchase products designed specifically for disinfecting various household surfaces, although hospital-grade disinfectants are usually very expensive, and available through Myotcstore.com.

Cleaner
A cleaner that fits in the strong alkali category destroys microbes and dissolves proteins. Cleaning products such as oven cleaner, lye, and drain cleaners are this type. They are highly corrosive and cause chemical burns on the skin, and in the lungs, when inhaled. Products that contain sodium hydroxide are put in this category.

Heavy-duty alkalis are those that contain sodium carbonate. This type of cleaning product is used to remove fat from drains, greasy burners, and pans. Sodium carbonate is the building block for powdered detergents and washing soda. This type of cleaner is slightly corrosive, as it will burn skin and corrode aluminum products.

Cleaning chemicals that are put in the mild alkali category are ones that contain sodium bicarbonate, also known as baking soda. These cleaning products are used on areas that require a mild cleaning. Mild alkalis are safe to use around children and pets, as they aren't corrosive.

Strong acid cleaners are mostly used for cleaning toilets, bathtubs, and sinks. They remove hard water deposits, toilet rings, and soap scum. Strong acids are highly corrosive, especially to concrete, fabric, and metals. Cleaners that contain phosphoric and hydrofluoric acids are considered strong acids.

Mild acids are cleaners that contain levulinic, acetic, hydroxyacetic, citric, and gluconic acids. They are mostly used to remove hard water deposits from around the sink and on shower doors, rust stains, and tarnish. Mild acid cleansers made from citrus or acetic acids are safe for use around children and pets.

Solvents are cleaning chemicals that dissolve grease and oil. The ingredients in solvents include, but aren't limited to, acetones, denatured alcohols, and mineral spirits. Cleansers that contain solvents include spot removers, rug cleaners, and all-purpose cleaners. They are often flammable and combustible, so they must be kept away from extreme heat and open flames.

Soaps and detergents are used to emulsify fat and grease, and they are found in liquid dishwashing detergent and laundry soap. Liquid dish-washing detergent is safe for use around children and pets. The safety of laundry soap is dependent upon the brand and the additional chemicals it may contain.

All-Purpose Cleaner
An All-purpose cleaner is a kind of cleaner which can be used for many different kinds of clean-up jobs around the house. All-purpose cleaners are used to clean windows, mop floors, or to clean kitchen and other appliances in your house. All-purpose cleaners are usually kept in the kitchen, but they can also be found in other parts of the house such as the bathroom, basement, or garage.

All-purpose cleaners may use many different kinds of ingredients, such as detergents, grease-cutting agents, solvents, and disinfectants.

All-purpose cleaners can contain hazardous chemicals such as:
• Ammonia
• Ethelyne glycol monobuytl acetate
• sodium hypochlorite
• trisodium phosphate

Depending upon the ingredients used, all-purpose cleaners can irritate the skin, eyes, nose, and throat. They can be highly poisonous if swallowed. Some of these chemicals have a sweet smell which attracts animals and which can poison them, too.

When using all purpose cleaners, follow these safety steps:
• Wear rubber gloves to protect your skin
• Be sure that there is good air circulation in the room. Open several windows or keep a fan running.
• NEVER mix two cleaners of different kinds together, especially if one contains ammonia and the other contains chlorine. This can produce a gas called chloramine, and breathing its fumes could be fatal.
